    It sounds like to try to understand if the timing is right, -- What is changing/will change in my target market? -- When will the change reach meaningful extent? (you don't want to be too early) -- Why will out target market choose us over their currents means of satisfying the need we're addressing?

    Great story. But you should really stop saying "impact", "impacted", and "impactful". These are nonsensical words being used today as jargon for some reason that I can't figure out; nothing is being crashed into or collided with. You mean "effect", "affected", and "effective/influential", respectively.

    It comes back to and finishes on culture. Interesting! I would love to hear a lot more about these circles, Sir. Maybe we can spread them around the globe: perhaps build a 1,000 Heliogens in the US, Africa, AND here in Oz. Those would be 3 very big circles. Circles that make a world of difference. Keen and ready to discuss.

    When you start with the Scientific Principle, as suggested early on, ignoring sunk costs becomes easier. It is never not hard. No one likes to throw away effort. Yet, when the validated evidence suggests so, it becomes absolutely necessary.

    Hang on...say that again... "Even having the wrong focus is better than being unfocused"? That is learning. That is a lesson right there. Thank you, Sir.

    I think if/when I am asked, this is the lesson I will share first with those in my work environment. So many times, especially when the commercial screws tighten, have I seen the true corporate culture, as opposed to the motherhood wishes articulated in many company mission statements, vomit on the planned strategy. Culture certainly eats strategy for breakfast and when they don't agree, it gets messy.

    As Simon Sinek suggests, "Start with Why". Absolutely key!

    Question, Sir: how is being frugal different to being lean? These two things are obviously different. I'd be interested, though, to hear your thoughts on the matter.

    • @javi_park
      @javi_park 10 місяців тому

      key difference between frugality and lean is that frugality is primarily concerned with cost reduction, while lean is centered on operational and process optimization. ex: being frugal is like using a smaller boat to sail, trimming your sails to save money on fuel, while being lean is like refining the design and operation of your boat to make it faster and more efficient

    Perhaps "IterLab", Sir. (We can talk royalties later.) Love it! As I say to all the engineers I work worth, don't be afraid of Rev 1. It always seems to me that so many are so focused on getting it perfect the first time, on only ever releasing Rev. 0 of anything. With some things, sure: perfection IS possible. Not everything though.

    This reminds me of the phrase I have heard on another topic: "You don't sell your home because a lightbulb burnt out. You fix the lightbulb." Who knows: Maybe even find a better lightbulb. Definitely, a lesson worth learning.

    Have always loved that idea: "Advertising is the tax you pay for being unremarkable." I know the idea shocked me when I first heard it and it always seems to have a similar impact when I share it with others.

    Hi Tom from Idealab writing... When we prepared this information and the slide we incorrectly attributed the great advertising quote to Jonathan Cohen. The phrase "Advertising is a tax you pay for being unremarkable" was coined by Robert Stephens, Head of Geek Squad. We learned the phrase from Jonathan. Sorry for the confusion.
